Originally a native of Rosslare Strand in Co. Wexford, Jenny O’Brien moved to Galway in 1995 to study Fine Art and Design in the Galway–Mayo Institute of Technology where she specialised in Portraiture. She graduated with a Higher Diploma in Painting and Printmaking in 1998 – the equivalent of the current B.A. Degree Level 7 - her graduate exhibition being one of the first to take place in the Cluain Mhuire Art and Design Campus.
With 15 years experience as a painter, portraiture is Jenny’s specialisation. She also holds qualifications in photography, media, enjoys drawing caricatures and has had a series of cartoons published in the Galway Events Guide, The List. Prior to 1995, Jenny was involved closely with the Wexford Arts Centre where she participated in Community Arts projects, exhibitions, and taught children’s art classes. It was this experience, along with plenty of support from her family, which encouraged her to pursue her artistic interests.
A professional member of Visual Artists Ireland, Jenny now lives close to Athenry in Co. Galway, working from a purpose-built studio in her home where she continues to produce commissioned portraits.
